ファイルサーバ is the central computer system which stores the computer data and transits it to all the network computers or workstations which are connected or associated to it. File Server is usually of huge storage capacity which can store enormous data. File server is of utmost importance in any computer network since any loss in data in the server would translate to complete data wipe out and loss of information. Apart from storing data and transmitting it to its network workstations, in case of any technical faults in any of the workstations, by accessing the file server system the IT coordinator can trace the bug and resolve it without physically operating the troubled workstation. About a decade ago, file servers used to be large hardware equipments which needed huge rooms to be placed and operated from. Owing to technological developments around us, file server nowadays come very compact and suitable to the need of smaller enterprises as well. When file server was originally introduced it used to cater to the needs of limited number of computers connected to it. As the internet technology and network connectivity has improved, in the current scenario, a single file server transmits data centrally to a huge network of workstations in any corner of the world.

File Server not only stores data but also performs the duty of controlling the operations of its network workstation. A file server can be compared to the heart in a human body which pumps blood to all the other parts of the body. In case the heart fails the entire human body fails and perishes. In the same way, in case of any default in the file server, the workstations suffer and deteriorate in their performance. In case of the file server ceasing to function, all the workstations stop functioning and remain merely hardware equipment. File server needs to be kept safe in a secluded space free of dust and in a controlled temperature so that it is not affected by moth, mould, vermin and due which might hinder its performance. File server is generally used where intranet and wide area network is used. Generally in smaller enterprise where the network is only limited to a few systems there is no file server in place and each of the systems are connected to each other only through local area network. When workstations are placed at different locations and perform the same function for the same entity of the business enterprise a single file server is used to connect all the workstations.
